Midomi, a new startup launched today. It is a voice based music search engine that has joined the fat social network scene. With a microphone, you can sing, hum, yell a song and the search engine will link you to the original song, a choice to purchase the track and give you links to potential relevant results which may include others that have recorded themselves singing too.
Their mission is to make music searching fun and easy and find a nice network of people with the same musical interests. You can contribute to the database by singing in midomi’s online recording studio, so your performance may be highlighted the next time someone searches the song.
This is a good idea, as many times one comes into a situation where he hears a song on the radio, in a restaurant, passing by someone and was dying to know who the title/singer was… that happens to me a lot. I am not too sure about its accuracy as I didn’t get the songs that I wanted when I tried it out but you may have better results. I blame it on my bad microphone and horrible voice. They really should put a disclaimer saying it works for people with good singing voices only.
For those of you who can’t find success in searching for the song with your voice, you can type the song in instead. However, that really defeats the whole point of the concept. A cross between Last.fm and Bix.com, this is worth checking out.
