power cost monitorThe Powercost Monitor? is a small real time device for domestic energy consumers. It tells at a glance, how much electricity their home is using in dollars and cents and kW.

Costing around $130, it consists of two discrete units, the detection unit and the display unit.

The detection unit is affixed to a household utility meter with a simple ring clamp and the inbuilt transmitter tracks the energy consumer by counting the turns of the meter disk. This is the only component that will be in direct physical contact with the meter making it legal.

The display unit (which can be located in the home) receives a wireless signal at periodic times and displays the real time consumption information in $$$ and kW.

The brainchild of Danny and Maurice Tuff, Newfoundland, Canada, the PowerCost Monitor is already a hit with Ontario’s Hydro One utility where they bought 30,000 units netting Blue Line approximately $4 million. About 50-60 more utilities are eyeing up this device including some over this side of the border.
